A second chance

February 8th, 2011 by Richard Chudy

I’ve had this idea for a while, going back to re-review a burger that I initially gave a low score. As people often point out to me, a real critic would go several times before settling on a review. Well, I am not a real critic, and neither my physique nor my wallet can afford to in most cases. But maybe I went on an off-day, maybe I had a completely strange experience and the burger was not a normal example of how good it really is. So let’s put it to a vote, or I’ll at least listen to your thoughts, where I should go back and try again? I think the initial review will stand, but I promise to write a new one with completely new thoughts and hopefully a new (and better) score. I was thinking of the following, but maybe you had something else in mind?

– R.F. O’Sullivan’s

– The Paramount

– Cafeteria

– Trina’s Starlite Lounge

– Green Street Grill

-Jerry Remy’s

-The Oak Room

-Bukowski’s

-Other???

Congratulations, you have created the most annoying food blog on the planet.

Honestly I could care less about you giving these places another shot. Sure maybe they had an off-night but I doubt it.

I’d rather see you keep digging into new (to you) burgers and giving your honest feedback.

    • In many ways I agree with you, I don’t typically believe in off-nights, as I’m sure I’ve said before. I acknowledge a restaurant could be shitty on the day I go and good another time, but to me that’s an inconsistency issue if nothing else, which is a flaw either way. It is always more fun to go somewhere new 99% of the time, but I kind of like this experiment too.

I see what you’re saying, I love experiments.

As a reader, I get more value out of you reviewing new burgers. Call it running interference if you want, but it is valuable for me to read your blog and avoid the sub-par joints.

Totally torn. Some of those burgers we ate were pretty bad and I’m not sure I’d want to cough up more money and risk having another bad experience. But then again, doesn’t everyone deserve a second chance? Quite the conundrum.

And PS, most annoying food blog? Saltiest, sure. Annoying? Not so much.

    Definitely go back to R.F.
Bukowski is worth it for me during midnight madness– their burger is worth $5 ater 12 am.

You should return to re-review some of these places, and not just because the restaurant may have had an off-night. There is always the possibility the cook that night accidentally burned a bun, or overcooked a burger, and it was an isolated incident.

But, then you should also consider that your own mindset likely varied from visit to visit. If you had a rotten day, it might have negatively affected your review that day. You might just have been overly critical that day. On a different day, you might have had one of the best days ever, and thus be more willing to overlook a burger’s flaw and give it a higher score. There are other potential subconscious issues that could have affected your reviews, so a second visit to these restaurants is warranted.

    • Well said, Richard. Lucky (or unlucky) for the restaurants, I’m always grumpy, so my mood is at least consistent. But I do think in fairness I should go back to at least a few of these places.

Try Remy’s… The USDA prime burger is worth it

  9. Ron says:

I’m not sure about off nights. I have mentioned to you before to try the black and bleu at Joe’s on newbury st. I go there all the time always consistent. And I went to the one in woburn and thers always taste terrible. And 1 that’s not to expensive Is Texas rd House in Everett with sauted onions mushrooms and chese. I tell them not to put the let tom on it but leave them on the side. The price around 8 bucks you will be surprised.

The only burger here that I’ve had both good and bad days at is R.F. O’Sullivan. But I’ve had better days than not. Love me that ball of beef…

  11. Mr. Negroni says:

I think you should try Trina’s again. Maybe try one with what you want on it in addition to the Starlite style one.
