Lulu’s Allston

Shiny and with an open concept, Lulu’s still has that new restaurant smell and is a welcome addition to the Allston ‘hood. The menu is vast with pub influenced bites, plates and sandwiches and a slight accent of gluttonous offerings to boot. Two burgers appear on the menu (three if you count a black bean one a burger; I don’t), one very normal, one very much a knife and fork sounding job. Beat Hotel

The folks behind The Beehive in the South End opened up the Beat Hotel in Harvard Square and pretty much made a similarly delightful burger. The Prime Burger ($15) is a tall one, staring right back at you like many classic pub-looking burgers before it. The menu offers no hint of what’s to come, but after digging a little deeper I learned this burger comes with a Port Wine aioli,  crispy tobacco onions, served on a Hi-Rise potato roll and a side of vinegar slaw. Interesting that none of that is listed on the actual menu and even more interesting that I probably found it more favorable before I learned all that, since you could barely taste any of it. But I digress; it’s forgivable because it’s quite delicious no matter how you slice it. continue reading »

Beacon Hill Bistro

It’d probably be simpler if we could ignore price and just focus on the quality of the burger in hand. In some ways, price is just one factor of many, but it’s always something to think about, especially when that price tag slowly creeps higher and higher. But the flavor of the beef can often trump the price tag, within reason of course, and that beef better be damn great to be worthy of semi-frequent visits. The Beacon Hill Bistro burger launches off at $16, which comes with a side of fries and a red eye aioli (more on that later), and nothing else. Upgrading with cheese (cheddar or blue) will set you back $2, as will the bacon of the day. Of course I went with both, and for all you math majors out there, that comes to a grand total of $20. But how was it?

Union Bar and Grille

It’s hard to say whether or not Union Bar and Grille is still a reliable food destination. It’s a shiny space with a comfortable bar setting, and that’s exactly where I found myself on a recent outing. It’s surely an enjoyable place to sip on a few cocktails, leisurely wasting the day away in the process. The burger certainly sounds appealing, as the “Prime Chuck Burger with smoked tomato remoulade with cheddar, bacon and fries” feels appropriately priced at $14.75. Citizen Pub

There’s always been something slightly off about Citizen Pub for me; a seemingly hip place with a great Whiskey list, I know many who adore it but I always found the service to be lackluster and the food and cocktails uninspired and painfully ordinary. A great effort and with past dishes and meals, it was serviceable but just a notch below similar restaurants in the city. I’ve been after their burger for a while; however, it’s always looked great as it passes through the dining room and I’ve received more than a few email endorsements on its behalf. The description of the burger on the menu doesn’t do it justice, and that’s a compliment. Simply listed as “Ground Sirloin Burger, local Cheddar or English Stilton, Golden Fries, $14,” makes it sound ordinary. But make no mistake about it, this is one beefy and delicious burger. continue reading »

What makes a great burger? It’s not a big secret, most restaurant dishes, especially of the comfort food variety, succeed because they are not shy with salt or fat. Burgers are no exception; season aggressively and don’t skimp on the fat and you’re off to a delicious start. Burgers aren’t a diet food, better stick with the salad if you want something healthier, the ideal burger shouldn’t be good for you. Which isn’t to say the burgers at JM Curley are overly greasy or salty, it isn’t, although it is in fact, a strong contender for one of my new favorites in Boston. continue reading »
