Bukowski’s

August 11th, 2010 by Richard Chudy

Bukowski’s stinks, I can’t be any more poetic than that, but it’s just so lazy. Going for lunch yesterday I had read all about the not so secretive “buck burger” which used to cost $1.67 but now has reached a whopping $2 for the standard hamburger before 8pm on weekdays. Fries and any toppings will cost an extra dollar, so the addition of cheese and a side of fries still made it an unbelievable deal at $4. There’s so bullshit here, literally a burger with cheese, a bun and fries, this burger’s got no place to hide. Best case scenario it could have been on par with Highland Kitchen, who did things the right way and made sure each ingredient was perfect. But Bukowski’s doesn’t seem to care, why ask how I want it cooked when it’s going to arrive way overdone anyway?  continue reading »

Corrib Pub

August 7th, 2010 by Richard Chudy

I think expectations often dictate how a burger will be. While I’m still on the search for the best burger in Boston, I’m also realistic, I don’t think each new burger will be the best one and I can end my search, but I have to get to them all. I never expected the Corrib Pub to have Boston’s best burger, and it doesn’t, really I expected it to be somewhat of a train wreck, so in that respect I was slightly surprised that was relatively tasty. Conversely, I’ve been to numerous places that were supposed to be the greatest (Radius, O’Sullivan’s, 5 Guys) but couldn’t live up to the hype, it’s not that I disliked those places just to be different, but when the majority of burger enthusiasts are saying it’s the best, and it falls short, then it’s a serious downgrade. The Corrib Pub has three locations in the Greater Boston area, in a bit of a rush, we hit up the Brighton spot for a quick lunch on Friday. continue reading »

Highland Kitchen

July 2nd, 2010 by Richard Chudy

I was grumpy last night, not for any particular reason, more of a looking to complain about something kind of a night. But those who know me, well, it was pretty much business as usual, no surprises here. My dining companions feared that I hated the burger before I even tried it, but just to prove them wrong, I loved it. Let’s be clear, I loved the burger, but nothing else on that plate was enjoyable. Highland Kitchen, slightly out my comfort zone in Somerville, has a very similar vibe to Trina’s Starlite Lounge, another Somerville establishment. Both are eerily identical in terms of style, substance, and ambiance, attracting local hipsters and bitter chefs from Watertown. I was turned off by poor customer service over the phone, (no reservations for parties less than six?) a twenty-minute wait on a Thursday night, and a menu that just couldn’t seem to make up it’s mind. (are you Southern or not? I don’t get it) Honestly, I couldn’t wait to dislike the food, because it would have been oh-so-fun to review, but that burger was just too damn good. continue reading »
